Coronado Art Walk Paints the Ferry Landing with Local Color

October 17, 2017 by islandgirl

Well, color me happy! The Coronado Art Walk is coming back to Ferry Landing this Saturday and Sunday (October 21 and 22) from 10am-5pm. More than 75 artists will showcase their original works of art in a diverse range of media from ceramics to textiles, photography to jewelry, from mixed media to paint and beyond. Best part? It’s free.

“It’s a really beneficial event for our community,” says Courtenay McGowen, chairperson of Coronado Art Walk 2017. “It’s relaxed and enjoyable, and it benefits the Coronado Historical Association.”

Attendees will get the chance to stroll and visit Art Walk favorites, all while listening to live music along the mesmerizing San Diego Bay.

“There’s entertainment both days, the Bayou Brothers, Breez’n, Prairie Sky and Bill Magee Blues Band,” says Courtenay.

But what makes the Art Walk really special? I think it’s the chance to discover new artists. Just check out this mermaid we bought at Art Walk a couple of years back. Our living room wouldn’t be the same without her.

And what about the kids? Don’t worry, they will have a blast too. Kids will have the chance to get creative at interactive art activities around the event.

“In the Art Activities area, the ever popular Rad Hatter will encourage your creativity, Dick Blick will do their ‘Paint a Square’ project, and there’s a face painter,” says Courtenay . “And new to this year…we will have Silly Twister Balloons.”

And don’t forgot all the places to pop in for a drink or a bite to eat around the Ferry Landing. (I don’t know about you, but there’s a white wine sangria at Candela’s with my name on it.)

“This is the first time we’ve had the event in October, so hopefully everyone will be pleased with the fall weather,” says Courtenay.

With the weather forecast for a balmy 76 degrees on Saturday, I should think so. Hope to see you there!

Day Drinkers, Behold! First Annual “Spirits by the Bay Festival” Haunts the Ferry Landing this Saturday

October 11, 2017 by islandgirl

He drinks a whiskey drink…he drinks a vodka drink…

Looking for something to do this weekend? A “spirited,” social event that incorporates the explosive combination of day drinking, mingling and live music? Look no further. The first annual “Spirits by the Bay” Festival comes to the Ferry Landing this Saturday, showcasing San Diego’s finest handmade concoctions from local distilleries. Sounds like a Beer by the Bay, but with hard alcohol. Sold!

“You won’t find any commercial spirits like Captain Morgan or Tito’s vodka here,” claims the event’s website. “The Spirits by the Bay Festival features a wide range of hand-made whiskey, vodka, gin rum, and much more from a variety of local producers.”

Revelers will enjoy sweeping Bay front scenery, awesome live music, nibbles from local restaurants and big plates from food trucks. And don’t forget the sips and samples from local distilleries!

The event runs 1-5pm, with early noon access for VIP ticket holders. Online ticket prices start at $45 and go up to $65 for a VIP ticket. (Ticket prices are higher at the door so be sure to get your tickets in advance!)

Put on by the San Diego Distiller’s Guild and Hearts for San Diego, this event won’t leave you stone-cold sober, so be sure to plan an Uber!

See the website for ticket sales info and more details.

Four for Friday!

October 5, 2017 by islandgirl

This is the part of the blog where I share great deals you can score without leaving the island! Let’s get right to it.

1.”Wine and Paint” workshop at Emerald C Gallery. Cozy up at Emerald C for some brush dipping and wine sipping! You’ll create your own canvas masterpiece, and the $40 fee includes supplies, instruction and all the wine you can drink! But don’t forget to RSVP…space fills up fast. Workshops run every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 6-8pm. Cheers to that! Register online and preview the paintings here.

2. The Pumpkin Spice Candle by Our Own Candle Company. Nothing says Fall like pumpkin ANYTHING. I bought this candle a couple of weeks ago and it makes my house smell amazing! Getting ready to Amazon Prime a couple more of these bad boys. Check it out here. Amazon, currently $14.99.

3. “I’m Here for the Boos” Tank. I grabbed this from Target last week to make my $80 “Target minimum” and I love it. My daughters think its super cute, and I dig the witty (and appropriate) pun. Target, $12.99.

4. Happy Hour at Il Fornaio. I love getting cozy in the bar or toasty under the heat lamps in the outdoor patio for this happy hour. How can you beat eating $6 pizzas a stone’s throw from the blue bay? Happy Hour runs Monday-Friday from 3-6pm. 1333 First Street, Coronado. 619-437-4911.

Thanks for reading, and happy Friday!
